Egyptian Military Aircraft Passed Through Armenian Airspace and Landed in Azerbaijan

On March, an Egyptian Air Force Antonov An-74t-200A transport aircraft passed through Armenian airspace and landed at Ganja International Airport in Azerbaijan. This was reported by Sputnik Armenia.

The reason is that military flights, including those transporting weapons to Azerbaijan, typically fly through Turkey and Georgia. Considering that flights of non-civilian aircraft through the country’s airspace require separate permission, we requested information regarding this flight from the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia.

The Civil Aviation Committee informed the media that according to a 2003 government decision (on the rules for organizing air traffic), if there are no other regulations stipulated by intergovernmental agreements, the flights of foreign state aircraft towards Armenian airports, as well as transit flights through Armenian territory, are carried out based on permits from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (after coordination with the Ministry of Defense and the authorized body).

The media outlet approached the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which confirmed the existence of a request regarding the transit flight. “On January 31, 2025, the Egyptian side officially requested permission from the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to transit through Armenian airspace during flights from Egypt to Kyrgyzstan and back between March 3 and 6. According to information from the Egyptian side, the flight was made for the purpose of participating in military exercises,” the agency stated.

According to Flightradar24 data, after landing in Azerbaijan, the aircraft continued its flight to Kyrgyzstan. On March 6, it landed again in Azerbaijan and then, via Armenian airspace, returned to Egypt.
