Trump May Increase Arms Supplies to Taiwan
According to Reuters, U.S. President Donald Trump's administration may increase arms supplies to Taiwan. It is noted that representatives from the U.S. and Taiwan are actively working on a possible new package for military supplies, but it will only be presented to the public after the island's administration secures funding for those supplies.
The White House plans to supply Taiwan with more weapons than during Trump’s first presidential term from 2017 to 2021. According to the agency, the presidential administration approved contracts worth $18.3 billion during that time, which is significantly higher than the $8.4 billion under former President Joe Biden.
The United States remains Taiwan’s most important international supporter and arms supplier, despite the absence of official diplomatic relations between Washington and Taipei. Reuters reports that if the U.S. increases defensive supplies to Taiwan, it may alleviate some concerns among observers and politicians regarding Trump’s commitment to ensuring the island's defense. However, it may also raise tensions in relations with China.
