EU Decides to Lift Economic Sanctions Against Syria

Member countries of the European Union have decided to lift the economic sanctions imposed against Syria. This was announced by the head of the community's diplomacy, Kaya Kalas, sharing the results of the EU Council meeting in Brussels.

“Today we have decided to lift our economic sanctions against Syria. We want to help the Syrian people restore a new, inclusive, and peaceful Syria,” she wrote.

Earlier, it was reported that EU Foreign Ministers were preparing to agree on the lifting of economic sanctions that were imposed during the presidency of Bashar al-Assad. This move is part of a reassessment of the international stance towards Damascus and aims to support the country's recovery after the departure of former President Bashar al-Assad from power.

It should be noted that the EU first imposed sanctions on Syria in 2011 in response to the harsh actions of the official Damascus against participants in anti-government protests. Subsequently, the EU repeatedly tightened the existing restrictive measures, expanding their scope and adding new restrictions.
