Lavrov-Rubio Phone Conversation: What Was Discussed
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation today. They discussed the results of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported this.
Lavrov noted that the U.S. played a positive role in facilitating Kyiv's acceptance of Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to resume negotiations in Istanbul. The Russian foreign minister reaffirmed that Moscow is ready to continue working together with American partners in this context.
The U.S. secretary of state, for his part, welcomed the agreements reached in Istanbul and emphasized the U.S.’s willingness to continue supporting the conflict resolution process.
During the conversation, a number of other international and regional issues were also addressed. It is worth mentioning that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to Ukraine to resume direct negotiations without preconditions in Istanbul on May 15. On May 16, Russian-Ukrainian talks were held in Istanbul, with Turkish participation. The negotiations lasted about two hours.
