Eruption of Europe's Most Active Volcano Intensifies
Ofelya
The eruption of Europe’s most active volcano, Etna, located on the island of Sicily, has intensified. However, Catania Airport has not yet been closed, according to ANSA.
The intensity of small tremors has reached its peak due to the volcanic activity since after 9:00 PM on Monday and remains at a high level. Frequent and intense eruptions are occurring from the southeastern crater, though the flow of lava to the east and southeast is not significant. Smoke is also spreading in those directions.
So far, the eruption has not affected the operations of the international airport near the city of Catania in Sicily, which is perpetually under the threat of volcanic activity.
