State of Emergency in New Zealand

The capital of New Zealand, Wellington, has been subjected to the strongest winds in the last decade, resulting in school closures and flight cancellations. A state of emergency has been declared in the southern part of the country, including Christchurch, following intense rainfall that lasted for 24 hours.

In Wellington, the average wind speed reached up to 87 km/h (54 mph), the highest recorded since 2013. In the coastal area of Bering Head, located south of the capital, wind gusts reached up to 160 km/h, according to the country’s meteorological service. The city has issued a red warning at its highest level.

Several roads have been closed, and in coastal areas, waves have breached the shore, littering the roads with debris. Local authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors. Residents of one seaside neighborhood have been advised to spend the night elsewhere due to the risk of possible flooding.

At Wellington International Airport, several flights have been canceled after midday, and ferry services between the North and South Islands have been temporarily suspended. Several schools and Victoria University have also closed.

The heavy rains in Christchurch have caused flooding, landslides, and fallen trees, leading to serious issues in the city.
