Serzh Sargsyan and Others' Acquittal Case Sent for New Trial

The Appeal Anti-Corruption Court has granted the Prosecutor's appeal, annulled the ruling of the first-instance general jurisdiction court regarding the acquittal of Serzh Sargsyan and others, and sent the case back for a new trial. This information has been reported by the General Prosecutor's Office.

It is recalled that Serzh Sargsyan faced charges in 2019 under Article 38-179, Part 3, Point 1 of the RA Criminal Code for embezzling or misusing significant amounts of public funds. According to the indictment, during the implementation of state support programs, a sum of 489,160,310 AMD was misused by Sergei Karapetyan during the period from January 25 to February 7, 2013, in a scheme organized by Sargsyan and incited by Vardges Beglaryan, with the assistance of Samvel Galstyan and Gevorg Harutyunyan.

The former president denied the charges against him. On May 31, 2024, the first-instance general jurisdiction court acquitted the third president of the Republic of Armenia and other defendants due to the absence of corpus delicti. The court's decision lifted the preventive measures imposed on Serzh Sargsyan, Vardges Beglaryan, and Gevorg Harutyunyan, removing the prohibition on leaving the country.
