Which University Will Host New Supercomputers? Andreasian Provides Details

At Yerevan State University, a new supercomputer acquired by Armenia will be installed. The supercomputing center is expected to be operational by the end of the year. This was announced by Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Zhanna Andreasian during a government meeting.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recalled that funding was allocated in last year's budget to purchase a new supercomputer from NVIDIA. “I know that the supercomputer is already physically in Armenia and needs to be installed. There are discussions regarding the installation site,” said Pashinyan, inquiring about the progress of the installation and accessibility work.

Minister Andreasian confirmed that the supercomputer will arrive in Armenia on December 26, 2024. “Installation work is currently underway. There are some legal issues in the process of resolution. The site for the installation will be Yerevan State University. The acquired supercomputer is not simply a duplicate of the one installed in the Engineering City; we have a device that fundamentally provides different functional capabilities, enabling extensive calculations across various directions, meaning that it will work with large volumes of data. These calculations are necessary in various fields—ranging from high-performance computing, data analysis, visualization, as well as for health and biomedical research,” the minister stated.

According to her, considering that it will be located at YSU, significant opportunities will arise in educational programs. “The establishment of this center at YSU also provides a substantial opportunity for the university to enhance its ranking,” Andreasian noted. The minister revealed that they planned for installation work to start in May and to complete it in a short timeframe. Andreasian believes that the center will be operational by the end of the year.
