3600 Deaths and Over 70,000 Injured in 10 Years: Khachatryan on Road Accidents
The importance of road safety is undeniable and holds critical significance for Armenian society, both in terms of personal and public safety. This was stated by Armen Khachatryan, a member of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Defense and Security, during parliamentary hearings initiated by the committee.
“Just a small statistical overview reveals that we are dealing with a highly significant sector. In 2024, there were 4314 road accidents resulting in fatalities or injuries, leading to 333 deaths and 6116 injuries. Only in the period from January to March 2025, there were 988 road incidents with casualties or injuries, resulting in 60 deaths and 1391 injuries. In crude statistical terms, this means that over the past 10 years, in a country with a population of 3 million, we have over 3600 deaths and almost 70,000 injuries, and we must not forget that 2-3 thousand of those injured will acquire lifelong disabilities,” stated Khachatryan.
These figures do not include incidents that only caused property damage. In 2024 alone, there were about 72,000 road accidents involving property damage. That same year, insurance companies compensated over 20 billion drams. This figure does not include casco insurance. There are analyses suggesting that Armenia ranks at best in the middle of the list of countries in terms of road accident fatality rates per capita, which, of course, is not satisfactory for us,” Khachatryan added.
