Guterres on Trump's Tariffs
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed hope that the trade tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump will not lead to a global recession. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
“I sincerely hope that we will not experience a downturn,” he stated.
Guterres emphasized that a recession would have “tragic consequences.” He also drew attention to the fact that there are no winners in trade wars.
On April 2, Trump introduced a new system of import tariffs for 185 countries. The baseline rate for all imported goods was set at 10%, while for certain countries, it was significantly higher — 34% for China, 46% for Vietnam, and 20% for the European Union.
In response, China also imposed a 34% tariff on American goods. World leaders condemned Trump’s decision and threatened retaliation.
