Statements About Erdogan Draw Criticism
The Foreign Minister of Turkey, Hakan Fidan, has called on the leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party, Özgur Özel, to "know his place" following Özel's statements regarding the Turkish leadership. This marks the first strong critique from the head of Turkey's foreign policy on domestic political issues.
It is worth noting that Özel, speaking at the party's convention, stated that all polls conducted in the republic show that they are the leading party in Turkey. The politician accused the authorities of "using force" against their competitors, labeling Erdogan’s administration as a "junta." He also announced a large-scale petition to express a vote of no confidence against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and to hold early presidential elections.
Fidan responded, stating, "It’s time for you to know your place. With the support of our people, the Turkish government has served Turkey for many years and has fought against all forms of guardianship. We have not received orders from anyone other than our people, nor have we sought consent from anyone other than our people. We have fought against all forms of power and guardianship directed against Turkey."
