We Condemn Any Manifestation of Discrimination: Ombudsman
The Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan considers the recent increase in discriminatory rhetoric, including targeting women, to be highly concerning. This was stated in a message released by the Ombudsman’s office.
"As a result of ongoing monitoring of social media and mass media by the Defender’s staff, manifestations of discrimination and hate speech have been recorded, which hinder the realization of women's rights and undermine public solidarity. Gender-based prejudices and misconceptions about the role of women are deeply rooted in society and at all levels of public life, contradicting the principle of equality before the law.
The Ombudsman condemns any manifestation of discrimination and any justification of unacceptable behavior resulting from it. Even more concerning is that such rhetoric is often propagated by political and public figures, as well as mass media. Moreover, within the context of public perception, manifestations of such speech are often not viewed as problematic and do not receive the necessary public backlash.
To ensure public solidarity and equality, it is crucial to eliminate gender-based misconceptions, stereotypes, and discrimination. Public figures are obligated through their activities to promote the formation of a climate of solidarity, strengthen the opportunities of women, and protect their rights—by not only excluding any discriminatory behavior but also by actively opposing such manifestations,” the statement reads.
