This Will Become the Last Nail in the Coffin of Moldova's Authorities: Ilan Shor
The detention of the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Guțul, will become the "last nail in the coffin" of Moldova's authorities. This was stated by Ilan Shor, leader of the opposition "Pobeda" alliance.
The Chișinău District Court partially granted prosecutors' requests on March 28 and decided to detain Guțul for 20 days. The defense intends to appeal the decision.
“20 days for Evgenia Guțul. Each such detention is a nail in the party's coffin lid (referring to the ruling party, Action and Solidarity). Stay tuned,” Shor wrote on his Telegram channel.
It is worth noting that Evgenia Guțul was arrested at Chișinău Airport on the evening of March 25. Her passport was confiscated during an attempt to go through border control, a full search was conducted, and she was prevented from flying to Istanbul (to participate in an international journalists' congress), although she held a return ticket to Chișinău.
Guțul has pleaded not guilty and has appealed to the presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, respectively, asking them to exert pressure on Moldova's authorities for her prompt release.
Guțul's arrest has sparked widespread public reactions, with support rallies taking place in Gagauzia's capital, Comrat. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, hopes that the principles of legality and democracy will be preserved in Guțul's case. Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian president, stated that Chișinău must abandon methods of pressure and allow freedom to all political forces in the country.
