Many Inmates Resort to Self-Harm Multiple Times
Garnik Danielyan, a member of the Armenia's National Assembly from the 'Hayastan' faction, writes: “I have learned that there has been another suicide in one of the penitentiaries. The year has just begun, yet there have already been 6 recorded deaths, 4 of which are suicides. There is also a significant increase in cases of self-harm. Many inmates resort to self-harm multiple times. The statistics concerning deaths and self-harming incidents among prisoners and detainees must be taken as a warning.
For months, I have been vocal about the disorganized conditions in correctional institutions; there are no basic living conditions, nor is there adequate provision of necessary medications or medical services for inmates. Psychologists and doctors are absent; their presence could alter this situation. Additionally, court hearings are irrelevantly prolonged, and cases are dragged on for years. The early release institution is also non-functional.
I have presented the issues I have recorded and the proposed solutions to both former and current ministers and deputy ministers of justice. I have also drawn the Ombudsman’s attention to these matters, which, instead of threatening me, should strive to change this situation. The continuation of these issues results from the failure to heed these raised concerns. Meanwhile, we are talking about human lives. I am confident that if we demonstrate will and take action, we can prevent deaths, suicides, and incidents of self-harm.”
