How Many People Participated in the Largest Anti-Government Protest Ever Held in the Balkans
On Saturday, tens of thousands of people gathered in Belgrade for a massive protest calling for the resignation of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. According to the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the protest drew 107,000 participants. Despite the rain, a large crowd waving flags filled the city center, making it difficult for people to move, with many remaining hundreds of meters away from the designated protest area.
Protesters assembled in several coordinated locations throughout the city. Public transportation was completely halted. In the lead-up to the protest, Vučić had repeatedly warned of alleged plans for unrest, threatening arrests and severe penalties for any incidents.
On Saturday, the air was filled with the deafening sounds of whistles, drums, and vuvuzelas. This rally, likely the largest anti-government protest ever held in a Balkan country, comes after more than four months of ongoing anti-corruption demonstrations, representing the most serious challenge to Vučić's authority after 13 years in power as a minister, prime minister, and president.
