Turkey Responds to Armenian-Azerbaijani Peace Agreement

The Chief Adviser to the President of Turkey on foreign policy and security, Akif Çağatay Kılıç, has spoken about Armenian-Azerbaijani and Armenian-Turkish relations, also addressing the peace agreement.

“Our position on the normalization process between Turkey and Armenia is already well-known. For us, the security and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan are the most important factors. Speaking from this standpoint, we are closely following the developments between Azerbaijan and Armenia after the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, the issue of the peace agreement, and we are taking appropriate steps in this regard.

Naturally, we are in discussions with Armenia. There are international organizations in which Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Armenia are represented. We work towards finding the right solutions, moving forward together, and living in peace,” he said.

In response to the question of whether the issue of mutual opening of diplomatic representations between Turkey and Armenia is currently under discussion, he replied: “There are no preconditions to discuss this issue in the existing situation. And I have no information on this matter. Once again, I emphasize that our position on this process is clear — the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia will be the key to solving many issues. The matter we are currently focused on is the process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.”

Kılıç, answering a question regarding the supply of weapons to Armenia by the EU and France, stated that Turkey and Azerbaijan will work together “to avoid undesirable situations.” “The process of Turkey's membership in the European Union has been ongoing for 60 years. There has been injustice towards Turkey in this process. During this time, we have learned how the structures of the European Union operate. In this context, Turkey and Azerbaijan will work together to avoid undesirable situations,” he stated.
