Unrest in Romania: Tensions Rise Ahead of Presidential Elections

Protesters have broken through the barriers near the Central Electoral Bureau of Romania, having learned about the decision to reject the candidacy of Calin Georgescu for the presidency, reports Digi24 television.

Georgescu announced on Friday that he had submitted documents to the Central Electoral Bureau for registration as a candidate for the head of state. On the same day, two complaints were filed with the Constitutional Court against his registration. The Romanian Constitutional Court announced on Saturday that it had rejected the complaints regarding Georgescu's registration as a candidate for president.

According to local legislation, the Central Electoral Commission can only make a decision on the registration of candidates after a decision from the Constitutional Court. On Sunday, sources from Digi24 reported that the Central Electoral Bureau of Romania had decided to reject Georgescu's candidacy in the presidential elections.

“Several supporters of Georgescu, upon learning of this decision, broke the barriers set up in front of the Electoral Bureau’s building. Law enforcement intervened and removed them, installing new protective barriers,” the television's website stated.
