Powerful Wildfires Rage in the U.S.
On Saturday, brush fires broke out in Long Island and near Brooklyn, while strong winds in New York have heightened the risk of fire spreading. According to NBC News, this information was provided by the National Weather Service.
Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in Suffolk County on Long Island due to forest fires in the Pine Barrens area. She reported that she has offered Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine 'any resources and support he may need.'
According to the governor, crews from New York’s National Guard helicopters have been deployed to assist firefighters on the ground, and state agencies have also responded to the forest fires. 'I am committed to doing everything necessary to ensure the safety of Long Island residents,' she stated.
A special weather advisory has been issued for New York and Long Island, indicating that the conjunction of 'low relative humidity at around 30 percent and northwesterly winds at 30-35 mph could lead to rapid spreading of fires,' the weather service reported.
The region at the greatest risk of wildfires is southeastern New York, the north of New Jersey, and southern Connecticut, which includes Long Island and all five boroughs of New York City.
