Bank Error: $81 Trillion Incorrectly Credited to Customer's Account in the USA
American bank Citibank mistakenly credited $81 trillion to a customer's account instead of the correct amount of $280. This was reported by the Financial Times, referencing internal bank documents.
The incident occurred in April, but it has only now come to light. The erroneous internal transfer escaped the notice of both the payments department employee and a second employee verifying the transaction. As a result, the transfer was approved, allowing it to be processed the following day.
A third employee noticed the discrepancy in the bank account balance and canceled the transfer. Consequently, no funds were withdrawn from the bank's accounts. Neither the bank nor the customer suffered any financial loss due to the mistake.
