Trump Orders First Military Operation
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he has ordered military strikes against a senior planner of the extremist group Islamic State, who is hiding in Somalia along with other members. The operation on February 1 marks Trump’s first military action during his second term, which began on January 20.
“These murderers, who we found hiding in caves, have threatened the United States and our allies,” Trump said in a statement. The strikes resulted in the destruction of the caves where they lived, and numerous terrorists were killed, with no civilian casualties reported.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated that he was informed about the airstrikes and expressed his “deep gratitude for the United States' continued support in the fight against terrorism.”
