Charges Filed Against South Korean President

South Korean prosecutors on Sunday filed charges against ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol for leading a rebellion and implementing a brief state of emergency on December 3, according to Reuters, citing South Korea's main opposition party.

The allegations are unprecedented for a South Korean president, and if found guilty, Yoon could face years of imprisonment for his shocking decree regarding the state of emergency, which aimed to prohibit political and parliamentary activities and impose control over the media.

His actions triggered a wave of political turmoil in the country, leading to the impeachment and removal of the prime minister, along with accusations against several high-ranking military officials for their alleged participation in the uprising.

Last week, anti-corruption investigators suggested filing charges against the imprisoned Yoon, who was impeached and ousted by parliament on December 14. Yoon has been in solitary confinement since becoming the first sitting president to be arrested on January 15, following an armed confrontation between his security staff and arresting officials.

The court has twice denied the prosecution's request to extend his detention during an ongoing investigation; however, according to media reports, they have again sought to keep him in custody concerning the charges filed.

Yoon's lawyers have called on prosecutors to immediately release him from illegal detention. Rebellion is one of the few criminal offenses from which a South Korean president is not protected. It is punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty, although no one has been sentenced to death in South Korea in recent decades.
