Ruben Vardanyan's Defender Reveals Exclusive Details

The Free Armenian Prisoners initiative has presented exclusive observations from Jared Genser, the international legal representative of Ruben Vardanyan, in an interview with The Armenian Report.

“The charges brought against Ruben Vardanyan and the other 15 Armenians are characterized as ‘politically motivated allegations’,” Genser stated in the interview. He emphasized that the trials being conducted in military courts, despite the prisoners' civilian status, lack transparency and impartiality.

Genser highlighted the following key features of these trials:

  • Closed proceedings: Court hearings have been held behind closed doors, attended only by Azerbaijani state media. International media and independent observers have been barred from entry.
  • Legal rights violations: Ruben Vardanyan has been denied communication with his lawyer and has not had the opportunity to review key legal documents, such as the 400-page indictment written in Azerbaijani, a language he does not understand.
  • Torture: The detained leaders have been subjected to severe physical and psychological torture, including solitary confinement, deprivation of food and water, and conditions of constant strict surveillance.

Genser stressed that these trials are part of a broader campaign to dismantle the leadership of Artsakh, suppress self-determination efforts, and erase the Armenian cultural heritage in the region.

He expressed confidence that the Trump administration is prepared to adopt a tougher stance against Azerbaijan, including potential sanctions and diplomatic pressure. He noted Trump's previous condemnation regarding ethnic cleansing in Artsakh, suggesting that this issue will be on the agenda under his leadership.

Amid optimism concerning the U.S. stance, Genser voiced disappointment regarding the limited efforts of the Armenian government in protecting the interests of Vardanyan and the other prisoners. He called on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to take a more active role in garnering international support.

Jared Genser also urged the Armenian diaspora to unite and take action. He presented specific steps individuals and communities could take, including:

  • Writing articles and collaborating with media to raise awareness of the issue
  • Working with human rights organizations to exert pressure on governments and institutions
  • Collaborating with other persecuted communities to promote global solidarity

“This is a fight for universal human rights. It is not just about Armenians; it is about the fundamental rights of dignity and freedom,” Genser remarked.

Despite the grim circumstances, Genser remains hopeful. He believes that ongoing international advocacy and mounting pressure on the Aliyev regime will ultimately lead to justice. He acknowledges the likelihood of severe punishment for Vardanyan and the other prisoners but emphasizes that such actions often provoke global outrage, compelling authoritarian leaders to reconsider their stances.

“Ruben Vardanyan's story is a testament to resilience, and it reminds us all that the fight for justice is never in vain,” Genser optimistically concluded.
