How Long Will It Take to Eliminate the Consequences of Oil Pollution in Anapa?

This year is expected to be challenging for tourism. Russian tourists have been warned about the potential cancellation of the holiday season in Anapa due to spilled oil. Environmentalist Georgi Kavanaugh has stated that he is more than 90% confident about this.

The same situation is anticipated in Crimea as well. Experts are still unable to predict what is currently happening on the beaches of the Black Sea or how long it will take to eliminate the consequences. The environmentalist reminded that the tankers are located at a relatively shallow depth, and the M-100 oil they were transporting almost completely sinks in the current water temperatures, except for the light fractions that float on the surface of the sea.

On the other hand, Kavanaugh noted that the area of possible oil release in Crimea extends over 500 km, making it nearly impossible to predict the next location of pollution. However, Kavanaugh is almost certain that there will not be oil on the shores of Crimea at the scale seen in Anapa.

It is worth recalling that in late December, the governor of the Krasnodar Territory, Veniamin Kondratiev, assured that the cleanup of the oil would be completed by the beginning of the holiday season. However, he previously insisted that cleaning the beaches in the region would be finished by February 1, 2025.
