South Korean President Arrested

The operation to arrest the President of the Republic of Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, lasted more than seven hours, according to Yonhap news agency.

The second attempt at arrest began on Wednesday at 3:20 AM local time (Tuesday, 10:20 PM Yerevan time). On the way to his residence, investigators had to overcome several rows of barricades, including those made from vehicles. Ladders were used during the operation.

Negotiations between law enforcement and the president's security personnel lasted approximately two hours. The office of senior officials investigating corruption announced that the order for President Yoon Suk Yeol’s arrest was executed at 10:33 AM local time.

At the same time, Yoon Suk Yeol stated that he decided to go to the precinct to prevent a bloodshed, but continued to consider the investigation illegal. At 10:53 AM, he was taken to the office of the Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit in a vehicle belonging to the presidential security service.

Law enforcement has 48 hours to interrogate the president, after which they will need to request another warrant to extend his detention. The materials for the interrogation that began at 11:00 AM exceed 200 pages.
