Olaf Scholz Confirmed as Chancellor Candidate for Germany

Olaf Scholz has been confirmed as the candidate for Chancellor of Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the upcoming extraordinary parliamentary elections set for February 23. The confirmation took place during a conference of the party in Berlin, where a simple hand-raising vote was conducted, according to TASS.

It is noted that only a few delegates refused to support the current head of the government. In 2021, the candidate was elected through a secret ballot. Now, the party leadership has decided to abandon that method and resort to so-called acclamation, a simplified procedure for candidate confirmation, because Scholz is appearing this time as the incumbent chancellor, not just as a candidate for the position.

According to the agency, Scholz's return to the chancellorship is currently considered unlikely. The SPD is losing popularity not only against its immediate rival, the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) candidate Friedrich Merz, but also against the right-wing populist party 'Alternative for Germany.' The difference between conservatives and social democrats stands at 14 percentage points. In this context, one of the most probable outcomes of the elections could be a grand coalition between the CDU/CSU and the SPD. In that case, Merz would become chancellor.
