False Evacuation Alerts Cause Alarm in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Emergency Management Department has apologized after erroneous evacuation alerts caused panic in the city. Millions of mobile phones received notifications urging residents to prepare for evacuation.

“This is reported by the emergency ministry's rescue service. An evacuation warning has been issued in your area,” the widespread message stated, including in areas far from hazardous zones. “Be aware of any threats and be prepared for evacuation. Take your loved ones, pets, and necessary supplies with you.”

It is noted that 11 people have died, and hundreds of structures have been destroyed due to widespread wildfires. The alert system was the first means by which many residents learned about the fires and the urgent need to flee.

Currently, there are mandatory evacuation orders in place for approximately 153,000 individuals in the area. Twenty minutes later, clarifications were sent stating that the alert was only related to a fire that had broken out in New Kenneth, north of the city.

However, a similar false alert was disseminated around 4 a.m. on Friday morning. Kevin McGowan, director of the Los Angeles County Emergency Management Department, stated that the automated errors have caused “frustration, anger, and fear” among residents. Fire containment efforts continue, and water-dropping helicopters have been deployed taking advantage of a temporary lull in the winds.
