Firefighting Plane Collides with Drone in California
A firefighting plane involved in operations in California collided with a civilian drone and was forced to make an emergency landing. CBS News reports, citing California's fire department spokesman Christopher Thomas.
Thomas detailed that the Canadair CL-415 aircraft safely landed after the collision, and the crew did not sustain any injuries. However, the left wing of the plane was damaged due to the impact with the drone.
In light of the incident, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is conducting an investigation. Flights of aviation and drones are prohibited in Los Angeles unless they are for firefighting purposes, making this incident a significant obstacle to fire containment efforts. The operator of the drone faces up to one year in prison and a fine of $75,000.
