Lebanon Has a New President
Davit Jalalyan
The Lebanese Parliament has elected Joseph Aoun, the commander of the army, as the country's new president in the second round of voting. Al Jazeera reports that 99 out of 128 lawmakers voted in favor of his candidacy. In the first round, the general received 71 votes, falling short of the required 86.
According to the television channel's commentary, this victory indicates that Lebanon has emerged from a deadlock. The term of former president Michel Aoun had expired in October 2022, and since then, Lebanon had been without a president.
