Trump Could Play a Decisive Role, Says Zelensky
Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday that the newly elected U.S. president Donald Trump could play a decisive role in the outcome of the 34-month-long war with Russia and help stop Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
In an interview with Ukrainian television, Zelensky quoted Trump's words, stating that the president invited him to Washington immediately after the inauguration at the end of January. “Trump told me, ‘I want you to be one of the first visitors.’ He said that ending the war is a priority for him, and he will work on it,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky also noted that stabilizing the front line is currently a priority. According to him, Putin fears negotiations, as they would equate to Russia's defeat. “Trump can be decisive. That is the most important thing for us. His qualities are such that he can play a critical role in this war. He is capable of stopping Putin, or more accurately, helping us to stop Putin. He can do that,” Zelensky stated.
