Investigators Enter South Korean President's Residence, Clashes Erupt
Anti-corruption agency investigators have arrived at the residence of South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol to execute a warrant for his arrest, according to Yonhap.
The agency's work has been complicated by protests from supporters of the state leader, who was previously subjected to impeachment related to the declaration of a state of emergency. Approximately 2,700 police officers are on site to maintain order.
Clashes occurred between the arriving law enforcement officials and both the building’s security and military personnel tasked with protecting the president. Representatives of the president have declared the arrest attempt illegal.
Thousands of the president's supporters have gathered near the residence in recent days, opposing both the arrest and the impeachment. The anti-corruption agency is seeking an order to arrest the president due to his refusal to appear for questioning.
Investigators have also obtained a search warrant for the president's residence. They plan to take Yoon Seok-yeol for questioning at the agency's headquarters in Gwacheon, which borders Seoul. Afterward, the president will be transferred to a detention facility in Uiwang city, located near the capital.
Investigators will have 48 hours to obtain a formal arrest order.
