The 16th World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen has been disqualified from the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships taking place in New York, as reported by FIDE's website.
During the 9th round, the Norwegian grandmaster appeared in jeans, which is prohibited under the tournament's rules. The organizers fined Carlsen $200 and requested him to change his attire. Carlsen refused and was not allowed to participate in the 9th round. In protest, he left the venue and did not continue his participation.
In contrast, Russian player Ian Nepomniachtchi was fined $200 for wearing sneakers. He changed his shoes and continued to participate in the tournament.
