The technical staff member of the Iranian embassy in Damascus was killed on December 15 when terrorists fired upon his vehicle. This was announced by the official representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Baghaei.

“On Sunday, December 15, terrorists fired upon the vehicle of Seyyed Davoud Bitarafi, an employee of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, he was killed,” the statement from the Iranian foreign policy agency reads.

The diplomat emphasized that the responsibility for identifying, prosecuting, and punishing those responsible for this crime lies with the transitional government of Syria, and added that the Iranian Foreign Ministry is seriously dealing with this issue.

On December 8, the Iranian embassy in Damascus was attacked by representatives of armed groups that have taken control in the Syrian capital. The Islamic Republic’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack and called for preventing similar incidents in the future. The diplomats managed to evacuate to Lebanon.

The Iranian foreign policy agency has stated that it will resume the embassy's operations only when the new authorities ensure the safety of the diplomatic mission's work.

At the end of November, armed opposition groups began a large-scale attack on the positions of the Syrian army. On December 8, they entered Damascus, Bashar Assad left his position as President of Syria and fled the country. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who was leading the so-called Salvation Government in Idlib province, announced his appointment as head of the transitional government of Syria, which will last until March 1, 2025.
