Results of the Presidential Elections in Georgia Revealed
Mikheil Saakashvili will become the sixth president of Georgia. He received 224 votes out of 300, according to the Central Election Commission. It should be noted that today Georgia held presidential elections.
For the first time in the country’s history, the head of state was elected not by the people but by a 300-member electoral college inside the parliament building. The only candidate for the presidency was former footballer and current parliament member Mikheil Saakashvili, who was nominated by the ruling 'Georgian Dream' party.
The current president, Salome Zourabichvili, had earlier announced that she would not resign from the presidency, as she believes that 'there cannot be legitimate presidential elections in a non-legitimate parliament.'
