Presidential Elections in Georgia Accompanied by Protest Actions

Today, presidential elections have started in Georgia, accompanied by protest actions. For the first time in the country’s history, the head of state is being elected not by the people, but by a 300-member electoral college in the parliament building.

The sole candidate for the presidency is former football player and now MP Mikheil Kavelashvili, who is nominated by the ruling "Georgian Dream" party. The electoral process is taking place against the backdrop of opposition protests in front of the parliament building.

Outgoing President Salome Zurabishvili previously stated that she would not resign from the presidency, asserting that 'there cannot be legitimate presidential elections in a non-legitimate parliament.'
