EU Might Impose Sanctions Against Georgia

The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has not ruled out the possibility of imposing sanctions against Georgia due to the ruling party's refusal to pursue European integration amidst a backdrop of protests. This was reported by dpa agency.

Kallas emphasized that violence against peaceful protesters is unacceptable and that the Georgian government must respect the will of its people and the country's constitution. Potential consequences for Georgia from the EU will be discussed in coordination with member states, Kallas explained during her visit to Kyiv. She mentioned that possible measures include sanctions as well as restrictions on visa issuance.

It is evident that the Georgian government does not respect the will of its people regarding a European future, Kallas stated. However, EU sanctions can only be imposed with the consensus of all member states. Currently, this seems unlikely, given that Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently expressed support for the Georgian authorities.
