Federal Cases Against Trump Have Been Dropped

The U.S. Department of Justice has dropped all federal cases against newly elected President Donald Trump. This announcement was made by the communications director of the Republican transition team, Stephen Chung, who called the decision a "great victory for the rule of law." He added that Trump and his supporters are seeking an immediate cessation of the political application of justice and are hopeful for the unity of the country.

The previous federal charges against Trump were related to alleged interference in the 2020 elections and handling of classified documents. At the same time, U.S. Special Prosecutor Jack Smith has requested the District of Columbia federal court to dismiss the proceedings related to Donald Trump’s alleged attempt to retain power in January 2021, despite his defeat in the presidential election. If presiding Judge Tanya Chutkan grants the motion, prosecutors will have the ability to file charges again after Trump leaves the presidency.

Smith announced in August 2023 that charges had been filed against Trump on four counts. He is effectively accused of attempting to unlawfully retain power, despite his defeat in the 2020 elections. The maximum penalty for the most serious charge against the Republican is 20 years in prison.
