New Traffic Rules for Scooters and Skateboards Come Into Effect
The traffic rules for individual mobility devices have come into effect. This was reminded by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia.
“In Armenia, particularly in Yerevan, there has been a significant increase in electric-powered individual mobility vehicles. The legislative regulations initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs establish the concept of 'individual mobility device' and regulate traffic with individual mobility (transportation) devices (electric scooters, electric skateboards, gyrorollers, segways, unicycles, and other similar devices).
The legislative amendments stipulate that individuals aged 18 and over, as well as those who are at least 16 years old and have the right to operate vehicles of the 'AM' subclass, have the right to operate individual mobility devices. The use of individual mobility (transportation) devices is permitted on bicycle or pedestrian-bicycle paths, and in the absence of those, in other places as prescribed by law.
The permissible locations for individuals under 18 (except for those who are at least 16 years old and have the right to operate 'AM' subclass vehicles) will be determined by the community council.
Organizations that provide individual mobility devices for rent are required to ensure that these devices are not driven at speeds exceeding 25 km/h. A fine equivalent to 29 times the minimum wage is also stipulated if the individual mobility device is not equipped with a speed measuring device as required by law. This provision will come into effect starting September 1, 2025.
It is prohibited to transport passengers or cargo using individual mobility devices (except for luggage carried without hands, such as a backpack). Delivery riders using bicycles or mopeds who ride without helmets or improperly fastened helmets will incur a fine equivalent to seven times the minimum wage.
Traffic with individual mobility devices is permitted in a single line, and it is forbidden to ride in tunnels, on wet road surfaces, and similar conditions.
For violating the requirements related to the traffic of individual mobility (transportation) devices, a fine equivalent to five times the minimum wage is anticipated. The primary goal of the legislative regulations is to form a new culture in this field in Armenia in line with international experience,” the statement reads.
