Abkhazia's President to Resign
Representatives of the government and opposition have signed an agreement after negotiations, according to which the President of the Republic of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhaniya, will resign, as reported by the state leader's press service.
“In order to maintain stability and constitutional order in the country, I submit my resignation from the office of President of the Republic of Abkhazia in accordance with Article 65 of the Constitution of the Republic of Abkhazia,” Bzhaniya's statement reads.
According to the agreement, citizens gathered in and around government buildings must disperse by November 19. If this condition is not met, President Bzhaniya will retract his resignation.
The People's Assembly of the Republic of Abkhazia will discuss President Bzhaniya's resignation on November 19, and the current Vice President Badra Gunba will become the acting president.
The current ministers will continue to perform their duties until the newly elected president of Abkhazia assumes office, as stated in the agreement between government and opposition representatives.
