EU to Send Political Mission to Georgia, Says Borrell
The EU will send a political mission to Georgia to investigate the results of the parliamentary elections. This was stated by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell.
“The parliamentary elections confirmed the country’s democratic deviation under the current authorities. The leaders of ‘Georgian Dream’ have diverted the country from the European Union, contradicting the aspirations of the Georgian people and the goal of moving towards EU integration. We all want one thing: for Georgia to return to the European path. For this, the government needs to implement decisive changes through specific actions. Georgia will not be able to move forward, will not be able to progress on the European path without significant changes,” Borrell stated.
He noted that the door of the European Union remains open for Georgia, but the government’s approach to upholding the rule of law and fundamental principles, including the conduct of Georgian elections, is distancing the country from the path of EU integration.
