Trump Appoints Musk to New Department for Government Efficiency
Billionaire Elon Musk and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new department aimed at achieving government efficiency, according to a statement released today by Donald Trump following his victory in the presidential elections.
"I am pleased to announce that the great Elon Musk, working with patriotic American Vivek Ramaswamy, will head the Department of Government Efficiency," the statement reads.
According to Trump, "these two wonderful Americans will 'work on' dismantling government bureaucracy, cutting unnecessary regulations, reducing extravagant spending, and restructuring federal agencies."
In commenting on his appointment on X, Musk promised that the operations of the new department would be reflected online for maximum transparency. "Anytime the public feels that we are cutting something important or not reducing something wasteful, just let us know," he wrote.
The businessman added that the department will also maintain a leaderboard of the "wildest stupid expenditures" involving American taxpayers' money and labeled the department's work a "threat to bureaucracy."
The name of the new department references Dogecoin (DOGE), the cryptocurrency that Musk supports. It is named after the Doge internet meme featuring a confused Shiba Inu dog.
Trump, who served as the 45th President of the United States from 2017 to 2021, won the presidential election held on November 5. He is the first political figure in the U.S. since the 19th century to return to the White House after a four-year hiatus. The Electoral College is set to vote on the candidates on December 17, according to the will of the voters, and on January 6, the new Congress will certify the results of the vote. The inauguration ceremony will take place on January 20.
