Situation at Lars
The road leading to the Upper Lars checkpoint has been opened for all types of vehicles from Georgia to Russia and in the opposite direction. This information was provided to Sputnik Armenia by Vahan Hakobyan, the customs attaché of the Armenian Embassy in Russia.
“Traffic has been restored for all types of vehicles on the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars highway in the Gudauri-Kobi section,” Hakobyan noted.
Yesterday, on November 6, heavy snowfall in the Gudauri-Kobi section of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars highway caused the Khashi Pass to be closed for freight transport in both directions.
It is important to recall that Georgia is constructing a bypass road to the most dangerous section of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars highway (Gudauri-Kobi). This involves the creation of a nine-kilometer tunnel. The project envisions a two-layer concrete road stretching 23 kilometers, along with 5 bridges and 5 tunnels. After the completion of the project, scheduled for 2024, vehicles will reach Stepantsminda from Tbilisi (at the Russian border) in 1 hour and 45 minutes, compared to the current time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. As a result, uninterrupted traffic will be ensured throughout the year.
