Destruction of a 300,000-Year-Old Natural Monument in the Hrazdan Gorge

In the Hrazdan Gorge, under the imposing gaze of Mount Aragats (not Ararat), a 300,000-year-old natural monument was recently destroyed by an excavator, making it one of the city’s landmarks. This was reported by Dr. Haik Demoyan, former director of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute.

“This is just the beginning. Soon, the excavator will be sending at least a 10-meter thick layer of rich archaeological strata—dating from the Stone Age to the late Middle Ages—into oblivion. After rain, one can find remains of medieval glazed pottery as one passes through this area. After ravaging the locale, a building will be constructed here. It’s better not to see its aesthetic anatomy; otherwise, one could easily inscribe 'Anatomy-2' on the city hall building,” said Demoyan.

“What I am saying, dear residents of Yerevan, is that if Zhanna Andreasian is not at her post, the archaeologists are subservient to the ethnographers. So, the defenders of human rights serving those velvet circles, progressive feminists, and rookie journalist-analysts cannot stand on the edge of the ravine under the direction of Petros Ghazaryan and protest? I would like to see that from my balcony to cool my heart a bit,” Demoyan added.
