Prosecutor's Office Provides Updates on October 27 Case

The Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia has issued a statement regarding the procedural actions undertaken from 2019 to 2024 in connection with the October 27 case.

It was noted that on December 27, 2019, the criminal case regarding the terrorist act committed by Nairi Hunanyan and others on October 27, 1999, which had been separated from the proceedings on July 11, 2004, and closed on November 11, 2004, was reopened.

The reopening was based on the complaint by the victim's legal successor, Anahit Bakhshyan, and her representative, which requested the annulment of the decision made on November 11, 2004, by the Deputy Head of the Investigative Department of the Prosecutor General's Office regarding the termination of the criminal proceedings.

During the resumed investigation, life-sentenced convict Nairi Hunanyan was interrogated and provided testimony concerning the circumstances of the incident. Members of the terrorist group, convicted individuals Karen Hunanyan, Derenik Bejanian, and Ashot Knyazyan were also interrogated during the investigation.

Personal files of other group members, Edward Grigoryan, Vram Galstyan, and Hamlet Stepanyan, were seized from relevant penal institutions to clarify several questions regarding the causes of their deaths.

During the investigation, a package attached to the criminal case was seized from the archives of the Prosecutor General's Office, as well as case examination volumes and audio recordings from the Judicial Department's archives, along with other materials of interest from the police and other units regarding the incident.

Video and audio recordings seized during the preliminary investigation have been subjected to forensic examination, and conclusions have been obtained. From 2019 to 2024, 24 witnesses and 4 convicts have been interrogated in relation to the criminal case, and 1 confrontation has been conducted.

Instructions have been given to various operational units to clarify different questions regarding the circumstances of the case. Various documents and electronic carriers, including video recordings, attached to the criminal proceedings have been examined.

By a decision of the Prosecutor General dated February 14, 2024, the continuation of the preliminary investigation in the criminal case was assigned to the Investigative Committee. The preliminary investigation is ongoing,” the statement from the Prosecutor's Office states.
