Azerbaijani President Aliyev Raises Concerns Regarding Peace Process

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has received Michael Carpenter, the U.S. President's Special Assistant and Senior Director for Europe at the National Security Council. Carpenter emphasized that the United States supports the prompt signing of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, noting that there are historical opportunities for signing such an agreement under the current conditions.

Aliyev pointed out that Azerbaijan is the initiator of the peace agreement and the five principles that underpin it, reaffirming the country's support for the regional peace agenda. He remarked that the fact Armenia sent its final proposals regarding the peace agreement text 70 days later raises "certain questions regarding that country's intentions to advance the process."

Once again, Aliyev stated that the main obstacle to signing the peace agreement is Armenia's constitutionally enshrined territorial claims against Azerbaijan. He indicated that Azerbaijan will continue to take decisive steps to advance the process.
