Iran May Respond Militarily; Concerns Rise in the U.S. - CNN
The Biden administration is concerned about a potential military response from Iran following the Israeli assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and it is working alongside Israeli authorities to strengthen defenses, reports CNN.
Hezbollah had previously confirmed the death of its secretary-general, Hassan Nasrallah, as a result of an Israeli airstrike in southern Beirut.
The Biden administration fears that Iran may be planning an attack in the wake of Nasrallah's killing, and is cooperating with Israel to bolster security measures, according to an anonymous U.S. official.
The source declined to specify what type of Iranian strikes are anticipated but indicated that both nations are preparing joint defensive operations, with some U.S. military units also undergoing repositioning.
On September 23, the Israeli military launched an offensive operation in Lebanon named “Northern Arrows.” Since last week, Israeli Air Forces have been conducting mass strikes on various Hezbollah targets across Lebanon. Several pinpoint airstrikes targeting Beirut have also been reported, resulting in the elimination of key Hezbollah commanders, including Hassan Nasrallah.
At this point, the Israeli military has reported strikes on several thousand Hezbollah targets. Observers note that Israel has not engaged Hezbollah with such intensity since the 2006 Second Lebanon War.
