Iran Demands Emergency UN Security Council Meeting

Iran is demanding the United Nations Security Council convene an emergency meeting regarding Israel's attacks towards Beirut.

The request is aimed at addressing the issue of Israel's "aggression" in Lebanon. In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, Iran has urged the council to hold an extraordinary session to consider the "terrorist aggression of the Israeli regime and the ongoing crimes of this militaristic regime" in Lebanon and throughout the region.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran unequivocally condemns these cowardly aggressive actions. Considering the severe consequences for regional peace and security, the Islamic Republic of Iran calls upon the Security Council to unreservedly condemn Israel's actions and to hold an extraordinary meeting in response to the terrorist aggression of the Israeli regime in Lebanon and the region," the letter states, as provided to journalists by the Iranian diplomatic mission.

Additionally, Iran calls on the Security Council to take urgent and decisive measures to halt the ongoing Israeli aggression and prevent the region from descending into a large-scale war.

On September 23, Israel began massive airstrikes on military targets of the Shiite Hezbollah movement in Lebanon. On September 27, the movement's Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah was killed in Beirut, a fact officially confirmed by Hezbollah on September 28. On the same day, ABC News reported, citing its sources, that Israel plans to conduct a limited ground operation in Lebanon.
