Video: Shanghai Hit by Strongest Typhoon Since 1949

The "Bebinka" typhoon, which reached Shanghai in eastern China on Monday morning, is reported to be the strongest to hit the city since 1949, according to China's Central Meteorological Administration.

Bebinka made landfall in Shanghai at 7:30 AM local time (2:30 AM Moscow time), with maximum wind speeds reaching 42 meters per second.

"Bebinka has surpassed Typhoon Gloria, becoming the strongest typhoon to strike Shanghai since 1949," the agency's statement said.

It is expected that Bebinka will continue moving west-northwest at approximately 25 kilometers per hour, gradually weakening in intensity, and by the night of September 17, it will downgrade to a tropical depression in the area where Anhui and Henan provinces meet.

Earlier, China's Central Meteorological Administration had issued the highest red alert for the typhoon.

Shanghai's Pudong and Hongqiao airports canceled all flights after 8 PM on Sunday (3 PM Moscow time). Chinese Central Television reported that flights would be suspended until 2 PM on Monday (9 AM Moscow time). Ningbo airport also halted flights on Monday at 11:30 AM (6:30 AM Moscow time).

Additionally, as reported by the television station, passenger train services have been suspended on some lines in the Yangtze River delta.

In Shanghai, express highways are either closed or under control, with a speed limit set at 40 kilometers per hour on the roads.
