Georgian President Aims for Re-election
The President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, has stated in an interview with Le Figaro that she is ready to run for a second presidential term to return Georgia to its European path. The term of office for the president expires in December.
The president believes that the pro-Western opposition will prevail in the elections. She also noted that the opposition will not be united, given the recent past, but they may be able to sufficiently unite around the European idea to secure 50 or 60 percent of the votes.
Salome Zourabichvili stated that the parliamentary elections will serve as a referendum on the country’s European future. Zourabichvili has accused the current authorities of shifting the political direction from European integration to rapprochement with Russia.
