Baku Again Mentions Armenia's Constitution as an Obstacle to Signing the Peace Agreement

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has responded to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's speech at the "Yerevan Dialogue" conference. Among other issues, they addressed Armenia's constitution.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reiterated that the main condition for signing a peace agreement is Armenia's cessation of ongoing territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

"This is enshrined in the Constitution of Armenia. Regarding the claims about the supposed existence of territorial claims from Armenia in Azerbaijan's constitutional act, we once again state that attempts to establish parallels and equality between the Constitutions of Azerbaijan and Armenia will yield no results," said the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

The ministry emphasized that there are no territorial claims against Armenia in Azerbaijan's Constitution: "It is entirely unfounded for the Armenian side to assert the harmlessness of territorial claims contained in that country's Constitution, while stating in the draft peace agreement that neither party can cite their internal legislation regarding non-fulfillment of obligations within the framework of the peace agreement. We reaffirm the well-known fact that no international agreement can take precedence over the Constitution. Regarding the Prime Minister's statement that Azerbaijan and Armenia recognize each other's territorial integrity within the framework of the Almaty Declaration, we would like to remind that the country referred to by the Prime Minister has grossly violated that obligation and occupied Azerbaijani territories," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's statement reads.
