Expecting an Extremely Harsh Winter: Ukraine's Energy Research Center

The upcoming winter is anticipated to be extremely harsh and challenging for Ukraine. The director of the Energy Research Center, Oleksandr Kharchenko, has announced that Kyiv could face up to 16 hours of daily electricity shortages, a situation that, according to the expert, is expected to become the norm.

Furthermore, due to the wear and tear on their own systems and the impact of Russian strikes on infrastructure, cities like Odesa and Kharkiv will also struggle. Kharchenko commented, “Odesa has almost no mechanical power converting it into electricity. Kyiv is a city that is in dire deficit in many aspects. In winter, there will be a shortage of 800-900 megawatts of power that needs to be imported from elsewhere.”

According to Kharchenko, Kharkiv is “under direct fire,” which means that “any station and any production capacity could be destroyed at any moment.” Therefore, he advises Ukrainians to prepare by acquiring generators. “Besides the absence of light, you will also have to cope with the rising costs of housing and utility services.”
